Rescue operations are ongoing in the Ashanti Region following the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Mpasatia, Atwima Mponua District, which has claimed at least two lives.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning when miners searching for gold became trapped as the pit caved in.
“So far, two bodies have been recovered—both male adults. One is from Mpasatia, while the other, identified as an Ewe, is yet to be named. There are fears that more miners remain trapped underground,” an official confirmed.
Emergency responders, including the police, initially arrived at the scene but later withdrew, leaving local residents to lead the rescue efforts.
“The police came in, but they have since returned to base. Now, we are making arrangements to engage the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for assistance. But for now, we have taken matters into our own hands,” said Salifu Karim, Assemblyman for Mpasatia Ahembronum, in an interview with Asaase News.
As rescue teams work against time, concerns grow over the fate of those still trapped in the collapsed mine.
