NAIMOS Officer Shot During Anti-Galamsey Operation in Bono Region

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has confirmed that one of its task force members was shot during an anti-galamsey operation in the Bono Region on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.

The incident occurred along the Subinkurom–Kyeremasu stretch in the Dormaa Central Municipality, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

Exchange of Gunfire

NAIMOS said the task force came under attack when armed assailants hiding in nearby bushes opened fire upon sighting the team, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

During the confrontation, one NAIMOS officer was shot in the thigh. He was rushed to St. Matthew Catholic Hospital in Ampenkuro, where he is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be responding well.

Attacker Killed

NAIMOS also confirmed that one of the attackers, identified as Abuu Ibrahim, was shot during the exchange and was later pronounced dead on arrival at the same hospital.

NAIMOS Reaffirms Commitment

Despite the attack, NAIMOS reaffirmed its determination to continue the fight against illegal mining, stressing that such incidents will not deter its operations.

The Secretariat called on stakeholders and the general public to remain supportive, noting that the protection of Ghana’s natural resources remains a national priority.

Authorities say investigations into the incident are ongoing as efforts intensify to clamp down on illegal mining activities across the country.
