Manchester United Appoint Michael Carrick as Head Coach Until End of 2025/26 Season

Manchester United have officially announced the appointment of Michael Carrick as head coach of the men’s first team, with his contract running until the end of the 2025/26 season.

Carrick, one of the most decorated midfielders in the club’s modern history, returns to the dugout at Old Trafford after previously serving as both a first-team coach and caretaker manager. His appointment has been welcomed by many fans who see him as a figure who understands the club’s culture and standards.

During his playing career, Carrick made 464 appearances for Manchester United and enjoyed immense success, winning five Premier League titles, the FA Cuptwo League Cups, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

After retiring in 2018, Carrick immediately joined the club’s coaching staff, working under José Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Following Solskjaer’s departure, he stepped in as caretaker manager and earned praise for leading the team with calm authority during a challenging period.

The former England international later took on his first full managerial role at Middlesbrough, where he spent two-and-a-half years as head coach from October 2022, gaining valuable experience in senior management.

Speaking after his appointment, Carrick described the role as a huge honour.

“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour,” he said.
“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club.”

Carrick expressed confidence in the current squad, highlighting his familiarity with several players and his belief in their quality and commitment.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season. We are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves,” he added.

Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, also voiced strong backing for the appointment, stressing Carrick’s understanding of the club’s winning mentality.

“Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United,” Wilcox said.
“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”

Carrick will be supported by an experienced backroom team including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans, and Craig Mawson.

The club also paid tribute to Darren Fletcher for his leadership over the past week. Fletcher will now return to his role as lead coach of the Under-18s, where he will continue to play a key role in developing young talent for the first team.

With Carrick now officially at the helm, attention turns to how he can steady the team and guide Manchester United through the remainder of the season and beyond.
