Mamponghene Daasebre Osei Bonsu II Passes On: End of an Era for Asante Leadership

The Asante Kingdom has been thrown into mourning following the passing of the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, an eminent traditional ruler whose leadership, wisdom, and service left an indelible mark on Ghana’s chieftaincy and governance landscape.

The Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty officially announced the death of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace, in accordance with Asante customs. His passing, at the age of 86, brings to a close a distinguished era for one of the most respected and influential stools within the Asante Kingdom.

Born Saint Oswald Gyimah-Kessie on December 31, 1939, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was not only a revered traditional leader but also an accomplished lawyer and economist. His career included notable service as the Registrar of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he demonstrated administrative excellence and a commitment to education and national development.

Until his death, he served as the Vice President of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, occupying the Silver Stool, a role of immense historical and cultural significance within the Asante traditional hierarchy.

A Life of Leadership, Courage, and Advocacy

Throughout his reign, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II was known for his fearless advocacy for justice and equity, notably making headlines recently when he demanded an apology from some political actors over divisive remarks about leadership selection within his jurisdiction. His stance reflected a lifelong dedication to upholding unity, respect, and dignity within the Asante Kingdom.

As Mamponghene, he was a pillar of tradition, a symbol of authority, and a unifying figure whose leadership extended beyond ceremonial duties to championing development, cultural preservation, and the welfare of his people.

Legacy of Excellence and Service

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II’s leadership journey remains a testament to integrity, wisdom, and distinguished public service. His passing is not only a loss to the Mampong Traditional Area but also to the broader fabric of Ghanaian society, where his contributions to traditional governance, academia, and national dialogue were deeply valued.

The people of Asante Mampong, the entire Asante Kingdom, and indeed the nation mourn the departure of a great leader whose life embodied service, scholarship, and stewardship.

May the soul of Daasebre Osei Bonsu II rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
