President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians to safeguard national unity and strengthen democratic values as the country marked its 69th Independence Anniversary.
Speaking at the national celebration held at Jubilee House on March 6, Mahama reflected on Ghana’s political journey and praised the country’s ability to manage political differences peacefully over the years.
According to the president, Ghana’s democratic stability has been sustained by a culture of tolerance, dialogue, and respect for the rule of law.
“Our democracy has endured because we have learned to compete without destroying, to disagree without hatred, and to transfer power peacefully,” he stated.
Tribute to Past Leaders
During his address, Mahama paid tribute to past leaders who have contributed to Ghana’s development since gaining independence in Ghana Independence.
He noted that every government, regardless of political affiliation, has played a role in shaping the nation’s progress.
“Every administration, regardless of its political inclination, has played its part in building the nation we proudly call Ghana,” he said.
Freedom Comes With Responsibility
The president also reminded citizens that independence is not only about freedom but also about responsibility and discipline.
He stressed the need for greater accountability in the management of public resources and respect for the law.
“Freedom demands responsibility. We must reestablish discipline in how we manage public resources, how we follow the law, and how we treat one another,” Mahama emphasized.
Putting Ghana First
Mahama concluded his message by urging Ghanaians to place national interest above political, ethnic, or personal considerations.
“Above all, we must place country above party, above tribe and above personal interest,” he said.
The Independence Day celebration serves as a reminder of Ghana’s journey since 1957 and the collective responsibility of citizens to continue building a peaceful and prosperous nation.
