Mahama Announces Plan to Ban Styrofoam Plastics in Ghana

In a passionate address during his ongoing Thank You tour, former President John Dramani Mahama revealed a bold environmental plan: to ban the importation and local production of styrofoam plastics in Ghana.

Speaking to a lively crowd, Mahama emphasized the harmful effects of styrofoam, especially when used in food packaging. “You finish eating, and then you just dump it. That’s one of the biggest polluters,” he explained, highlighting how indiscriminate disposal contributes to flooding and pollution in communities across the country.

🛑 Why Styrofoam Is Being Targeted
Styrofoam — known for its lightweight and non-biodegradable nature — poses a major threat to sanitation and drainage systems. Mahama’s proposed ban, to be enacted in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, would aim to reduce this threat by encouraging eco-friendly alternatives like paper containers and aluminum foil for food vendors.

💬 A Touch of Humor Amid the Serious Talk
While his message on sanitation was firm, Mahama managed to spark laughter with a playful dig at his political rival. As he read from his prepared remarks, he paused after saying, “Fellow Ghanaians, the journey from landfill…”

With a grin, he remarked, “Oh, fellow Ghanaians—that sounds very familiar, yeah?” — a cheeky nod to former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s well-known phrase used during the COVID-19 era. He quickly added with a smile: “Okay, fellow citizens.”

🌍 A Step Toward Cleaner Cities
The former president’s comments underscore a growing national concern about plastic waste management in Ghana. If implemented, the styrofoam ban could signal a major shift in how food is packaged and how the environment is protected.

Mahama’s proposal is part of a broader agenda to promote sustainable practices, improve urban sanitation, and engage both policymakers and citizens in the fight against pollution.
