LONDON, Feb 24 – Iran is reportedly close to finalising a deal with China to acquire advanced anti-ship cruise missiles, according to multiple sources familiar with the negotiations.
The potential agreement involves the Chinese-made CM-302 supersonic anti-ship missile system, a weapon designed to fly low and fast to evade naval defences. If completed, the deal would significantly enhance Iran’s maritime strike capability at a time when US naval forces are assembling near its coastline.
What We Know About the Missile Deal
Sources say negotiations between Tehran and Beijing began at least two years ago but accelerated sharply following the 12-day conflict between Israel and Iran in June.
The missile in question is produced by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC) and has a reported range of approximately 290 kilometres (180 miles). It is marketed as capable of targeting aircraft carriers and destroyers.
While the exact number of missiles involved and the financial terms remain unclear, experts say deployment of such weapons would pose a serious challenge to US naval operations in the region.
Danny Citrinowicz, a former Israeli intelligence officer, described the potential acquisition as “a complete gamechanger,” noting that supersonic anti-ship missiles are difficult to intercept.
US Naval Build-Up Near Iran
The development comes as the United States strengthens its military presence in the region. The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and its strike group are already deployed near Iranian waters. The USS Gerald R. Ford and accompanying vessels are also heading to the area.
Together, the two carrier groups can carry over 5,000 personnel and roughly 150 aircraft.
US President Donald Trump recently issued a 10-day deadline for Iran to reach an agreement over its nuclear programme or risk military action. The White House has not directly addressed the reported missile negotiations but reiterated that Washington remains prepared to take “very tough” action if diplomacy fails.
Deepening China–Iran Military Ties
The reported missile deal underscores growing strategic cooperation between Beijing and Tehran.
China, Iran and Russia have conducted annual joint naval drills in recent years. In September, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed support for Iran’s sovereignty during a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
Although China has previously denied supplying complete missile systems to Iran, US officials have accused Chinese entities of providing missile-related materials in the past.
If confirmed, the CM-302 sale would represent one of the most advanced weapons transfers from China to Iran in decades.
Regional Implications
Military analysts warn that the introduction of advanced anti-ship missiles could significantly alter the balance of power in the Persian Gulf.
Iran’s arsenal was reportedly depleted during last year’s conflict, making new acquisitions strategically important. Beyond cruise missiles, sources suggest Tehran is also exploring purchases of:
