Government Dissolves National Cathedral Secretariat, Halts Controversial Project

The government of Ghana has officially dissolved the National Cathedral Secretariat, bringing operations on the once-celebrated project to an end and signaling a definitive policy shift away from the controversial initiative.

The dissolution marks the effective suspension of the National Cathedral project, originally proposed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo as a national Christian worship center and a symbol of Ghana’s religious unity and heritage.

In an interview with Channel One TV, Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, confirmed that the government will no longer commit public funds to the now-defunct project. “There will be no further budgetary allocations to the National Cathedral. The state’s involvement has come to an end,” he stated.

The announcement comes amid persistent public criticism and allegations of financial mismanagement and corruption that have dogged the project since its inception. What was once envisioned as a monumental expression of national faith has increasingly become a lightning rod for controversy.

Concerns have been raised over lack of transparency, accountability in fund usage, and the prioritization of the project in the face of pressing economic challenges. Several civil society groups and opposition leaders have consistently questioned the scale of state funding, especially at a time when many Ghanaians are grappling with rising costs of living and underfunded public services.

With the dissolution of the Secretariat, questions remain about what will become of the unfinished structure and how previously allocated resources were managed. There are renewed calls for a full audit into expenditures related to the project.

For now, the once highly publicized National Cathedral project stands as a symbol not of unity, but of unfinished ambition and unfulfilled promises.
