Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine has strongly defended the recent search conducted at the residence of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, rejecting claims that the operation was unlawful or politically driven.
Search Warrant Justified
Speaking to the media on Monday, March 24, Dr. Ayine questioned the narrative surrounding the operation, emphasizing that it was legally sanctioned.
“How come a search of the governor’s house, based on credible intelligence, is now being labeled as a raid? I was the one who applied for the warrant, and it was issued by the High Court. Why is that now a problem? Are some people above the law? No one is above the law in this country,” he stated.
Response to Minority Leader’s Criticism
Dr. Ayine also addressed criticisms from the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has been vocal in condemning the search. He cautioned against abusing parliamentary immunity to undermine law enforcement.
“The constitutional immunity granted to MPs does not mean they should abuse that privilege to defame law enforcement officers conducting lawful investigations,” he asserted.
Potential Release of Dr. Addison’s Response Recording
The Attorney General further revealed that there is a recorded conversation capturing Dr. Addison’s reaction to the search. He challenged Afenyo-Markin to retract his allegations or risk the recording being made public.
“We have a recording of Addison and what he said about the raid. If the Minority Leader, Afenyo-Markin, is daring me, I’ll make that public. He should desist from maligning law enforcement officers and myself,” Dr. Ayine warned.
The unfolding controversy continues to fuel political tensions, with the opposition alleging persecution while the government insists it is upholding the rule of law.
