Telecom giant MTN has confirmed that an unknown third party claims to have accessed certain parts of its systems but firmly maintains that there is no evidence of any compromise to customer accounts or MoMo wallets.
In a statement released on April 24, 2025, MTN assured its customers and stakeholders that core systems, including the mobile money platform, billing systems, and network infrastructure, remain secure and fully operational.
“An unknown third party has claimed to have accessed data linked to parts of our systems. At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised,” the company stated.
Swift Action and Strong Security Measures
Upon detection of the alleged breach, MTN immediately activated its cybersecurity protocols and engaged law enforcement authorities, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks, with investigations currently ongoing across all affected regions.
The company highlighted its proactive approach, noting that it has begun notifying impacted customers as required by local laws and regulatory guidelines, while also providing advice on how to stay protected against potential threats.

MTN emphasized that protecting customer data is a top priority and advised all users to remain vigilant by adopting basic cybersecurity best practices:
